What do I do if ...

I have a sore throat?

Viruses or mechanical causes (such as mouth breathing) cause most sore throats and can be treated at home. Sore throats must run their course (exceptions: strep throat, tonsillitis, tonsillar abscess, or STD ).

Gargling with Warm salt water, chloraseptic, and drinking plenty of fluids can provide temporary pain relief.

A humidifier may be helpful in relieving symptoms, especially in sore throats caused by mouth breathing and dry air.

Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help control the pain.

If your nose is plugged, saline nasal sprays may be used.

Decongestant products, such as Sudafed, may be helpful.

If you have health problems such as heart disease or high blood pressure, contact a pharmacist or your health care professional before using these products.
